IVAD: 73.9% of Venezuelans back President Chávez
|
73. percent of Venezuelans support the performance of the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez Frías, according to the survey “General Index – Political Current Situation”, conducted by the Venezuelan Institute of Data Analysis (IVAD, Spanish acronym, also known as Seijas y Asociados). The survey was conducted between May 26 and June 6.
The survey showed that 50.6% of persons asked deemed themselves “identified with President Chávez”, which means that a significant number of independents and opponents also approve the performance of the Head of State. |
In contrast, only 17.5% deems that the performance of the opposition is “good”. This means that there is a strong rejection both by supporters of President Chávez and opponents against the political adversaries of the President.
Optimism
The survey was based on 1,200 interviews at households from across the country with an admissible error margin of 1.03 to 2.37%. A strong feeling of optimism is understood from the results of the study:
- 52.1 percent believe that the domestic situation has improved in the last three years;
- 55.8 percent believe that the domestic situation will keep improving in the coming months;
- 67 percent believe that their personal situation and the situation of their families will be better or a lot better;
- 62.7 percent of the population affirms that their personal situation and the situation of their families have improved in the last three years. In November 2007 IVAD research showed this figure in 41.2 percent.
Social Programmes (Missions) passed the test
70.6 percent of Venezuelans believe that the Missions have worked well, whereas 79.3 percent agrees that the Missions have boosted the educational level of the Venezuelan people. 82 percent agrees that Venezuela has increased the chances for people to receive training and education and the concomitant progress for the youth.
The people back the nationalization process
Surprisingly, 60.5 percent of the population showed support for the nationalizations undertaken despite the strong demonization campaign led by the private corporate media. %3.8 percent deem correct the nationalization of Siderúrgica del Orinoco (the steel company of Venezuela). Barely 20.3 percent criticize this nationalization.
The United Socialist Party of Venezuela
71.3 percent of the followers of President Chávez approved the creation of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV, the Spanish acronym). Only 2.3 percent believed the creation of this party was something bad. Curiously, 10.4% of the people deem themselves followers of the extinct MVR political movement.
Performance of President Chávez remains steadily growing
The acceptance index of the performance of the Head of State, which reached 73.9 percent, have been growing steadily ever since December 2007, when –according to IVAD- surrounded 58percent after months of continuous media attacks due to his proposal of amendment to the constitution.
After accepting defeat, taking measures like the amnesties he passed, and after performing a key role in the release of hostages held by the Colombian guerrilla group Farc, the acceptance of the President soared over ten points. He has kept growing in acceptance ever since.
56.8 percent would vote for Hugo Chávez Frías if presidential elections were held now. This means that he recovered back from a low blow which, according to IVAD, was manifest in December after months of attacks due to his proposed amendment to the constitution.
The government is taking grip of shortages
The foodstuffs supply problems was a pressing problem in the country, according to 50 percent of the population last February. This figure dropped to 22.1%, thus proving that the concern the people had due to the absence of some food items has been importantly alleviated. Yet, it still is twice the amount of people who considered this was a problem in September 2007 (10 percent).
Security and unemployment: Two of the major problems
The people surveyed deem security the main problem the problem is faced with, along with unemployment, political disputes, the high cost of living and foodstuffs shortage. All these problems have kept being relatively stable, with increases of 2 or 3 percent.
