Economical deals marked Chávez's visit to Qatar

(AFP) - "Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez stayed in Qatar on a two-day visit during which he attended a forum on investment in his country and seek to boost economic links between Doha and Caracas.

Chávez 'opened a forum in Doha under the theme 'How to invest and make business in Venezuela', Venezuelan ambassador to the Gulf state Carlos E. Rios-Scharbaay told AFP.

The visit is the fourth by the President Chávez to close US ally Qatar in as many years. Oil-rich Venezuela and gas-rich Qatar cooperate closely on energy matters, especially within the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Both countries signed a series of economic agreements during the visit. The deals would pertain to avoiding dual taxation encouraging mutual investments in the fields of gas, petrochemicals and tourism, and promoting trade, they said.

Chávez, who flew in from India headed a delegation of officials and businessmen who met Qatari counterparts to discuss joint ventures.

A Venezuelan official said businessmen from the two sides were likely to discuss the possibility of storing fruits and vegetables from Latin America in Qatar, which would be used as a transit point to market the produce in the Gulf region (...)".
