Carbozulia may produce steel
in 2006
(BNamericas.com) - "Venezuelan company
Carbones del Zulia (Carbozulia), in charge of
coal development in Zulia state's mines, may produce
steel together with its coal development in 2006,
the government reported.
'We are using our coal to make coke, combine it
with Guayana iron to make pig iron and then steel,'
Carbozulia general manager Nelson Romero said.
The company would produce 500,000t/y of pig iron
to make steel. Pig iron is generated in the blast
furnace during iron smelting and is the raw material
for the steel industry.
This initiative is another important measure to
add value to coal and would serve as a base in
iron and steel development to produce semi-finished
steel products for export or to be sold in the
domestic market. Carbozulia is a subsidiary of
Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA".
