Venezuelan referendum set for
August 15
(AFX Europe) -" A referendum on recalling
Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez is set
for August 15, Ezequiel Zamora, vice President
of the National Electoral Council, confirmed.
Council President Francisco Carrasquero said Chávez
that have been submitted 2,541,636 valid signatures
on petitions calling for a recall, more than enough
to trigger a vote. "The total of valid signatures
collected satisfies Article 72 of the constitution,"
Carrasquero said.
If voters choose to recall President Chávez,
new elections must be held within 30 days. To
remove President Chávez from power will
require at least 3.75 millions votes, the number
of people who voted for him in 2000".
