195 alternative media created in 7 years

(Panorama) - "Since the year 2000 Venezuela has experienced an expansion in alternative and communitarian media after the promulgation of the Law of Telecommunications, and later on, with the vigorous entrance of the regulations for Radio and Television open to the community as non profit making organisations.

According to the figures of the National Commission of Telecommunications (CONATEL) presently registered is the arrival of 195 alternative communication media with a total of 167 radio stations and 28 television stations.

To this amount we add 300 alternative newspapers, and more than 100 electronic publications, which include virtual newspapers, weblogs and other digital versions (...)

The Director of Communitarian and Alternative media of the Ministry of Communication and Information (MINCI) Lídice Altuve, commented to PANORAMA newspaper that the objective is to democratise information and communication because as opposed to the private and state media, it is the community that administers the media and the information (...)".
