(El Universal, reproduced by Conapri Newsletter)
- "The representatives of the member countries
of the Latin American Economic System (SELA) chose
by acclamation Venezuelan economist Roberto Guarnieri
as the new SELA permanent secretary to replace
Ambassador Otto Boye Soto, who completed the regulatory
four-year term.
Guarnieri is an economist with honors from Yale
University, with wide experience in the economic
area. According to the Foreign Ministry, SELA
representatives approved a decision in which they
observe `with interest the proposal to set up
the International Humanitarian Fund, as an innovative
financing mechanism to combat poverty.'
The Ministry said that the resolution was adopted
'because it is a project that responds to a concern
in the international community due to the reduction
in international funds to support the efforts
of poor countries to develop their economies and
eradicate poverty'".
