Venalum sees 2003 output at 434,000 tonnes
(Reuters) - Venalum, the largest smelter operated by state industrial holding Corporación Venezolana de Guayana (CVG) in south-east Bolívar state, produced an accumulated output of 288,081 tonnes in the first eight months of this year, down from 289,415 tonnes produced over the same period last year. The plant has a nominal capacity of 430,000 tonnes a year.

Venezuela's smaller Alcasa smelter produced 14,809 tonnes in August compared with 15,222 tonnes a month earlier, a spokeswoman for the plant said. Its eight-month accumulated output reached 114,514 tonnes. Venalum produced 36,757 tonnes in August, down from 36,916 tonnes produced last August.

Venalum is 80 percent owned by a wholly owned subsidiary of CVG with 20 percent held by six Japanese firms -- Showa Denko K.K. (Tokyo:4004.T), Kobe Steel Ltd. (Tokyo:5406.T), Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd. (Tokyo:4005.T), Mitsubishi Materials Corp. (Tokyo:5711.T), Mitsubishi Aluminum Co. Ltd. and Marubeni Corp. (Tokyo:8002.T).
